What did you miss if you didn’t come to the Dinner in Bloom Supper Speakeasy May 21? The chance to dine on five courses with expertly paired wine plus extras, all featuring flowers — while overlooking downtown Louisville from a perch high atop the rolling green hills of Indiana. The sweeping views and decadent food competed for guests’ attention in this dining adventure hosted at the home of Jeannie and Vic Unruh.
Guests had a chance to mingle in the Unruh’s fabulous home while enjoying Jeromy Edwards’s creations from the bar, including a lavender and white grape martini. They also took the opportunity to have caricatures drawn by Emily Ruppel and to nibble on pre-dinner treats also featuring flowers, like a colorful salmon tartare adorned with petals.
Mrs. Unruh welcomed the diners and shared her passion for working on behalf of people with MS. A portion of the dinner’s proceeds benefited the local chapter of the MS Society. Next it was time to gather around the tables — or the kitchen bar for a front-row view of the chefs for a lucky few — and enjoy chef Michael Hargrove’s array of delectable plates.
Many had their first ever pumpkin blossom, which added a festive touch to the vivid pumpkin soup. A perfect little ravioli of leek, onion, garlic and chive (the four lilies) was a crowd-pleaser, followed by lemon verbena sorbet to prepare for the next course, a perfect sliver of lavender and peppercorn beef served with potato confit. The crowning touch as night fell and the skyline glowed across the river was an elegant crème brulée topped with a tiny rose.
